Red Wine Braised Beef Pie

Day 2 sharing a recipe that is absolutely amazing.    The meat is fall apart tender with a rich flavor and if you don't love something topped with mashed potatoes you may have something wrong with you.   I saw a similar dish to this on Pinterest which inspired me to make this my own.  Again this meal is very inexpensive using beef stew meat and holds up GREAT for leftovers.  You could even make this ahead and freeze it nicely for someone.   I cant wait to dig into the rest of mine for lunch!!!!!

*Sorry it is not paleo the meat has flour in it and the whole thing is topped with mashed potatoes.   Sorry paleo peeps it is hard for me to cook paleo all the time with a 13 month old.  He LOVES potatoes.

Ingredients for meat

  1. 2.5 pounds beef strew meat ( season it generously with s&P before searing)
  2. 3 carrots chopped
  3. 2 stalks celery chopped
  4. 1 shallot chopped
  5. 4 cloves garlic
  6. 1 bag frozen peas
  7. 2 tablespoons flour
  8. 2 cups red wine ( I used cab)
  9. 14 oz beef broth
  10. 3/4 cup water
Ingredients for Potato Topping
  1. 4 russet potatoes peeled and quartered
  2. 1/2 stick butter
  3. 3/4 cup milk
  4. s&p to taste
Directions
  1. get water boiling for potatoes
  2. sear the beef in dutch oven
  3. add veggies to beef until tender (about 5 mins)
  4. sprinkle in flour and stir
  5. Add wine, beef broth, and water bring to a boil
  6. put lid on and turn down to low heat for 2.5 hrs
  7. After 2.5 hrs take meat out and it will shred easily with a fork.  SO GOOD!!
  8. Mash potatoes with milk, butter and s&P
  9. transfer meat to oven safe casserole dish, add peas and top with taters.
  10. When ready to serve cover with foil and heat on 350 for 20 mins.  Take foil off and broil for additional 5 mins or until potatoes are golden brown.
