New Kids on the Block

Pete and I attended our first block party in the new neighborhood last night.  I'm not exactly the block party type and was really dreading it.... Pete on the other hand was so excited it made me laugh.   I never grew up going to block parties or being social with neighbors so my initial instinct was lock the door and turn off the lights they will think we are out of town.  Obviously this was not a choice since I am married to the Mayor of Kenwood so I decided to make some good food and brave the awkward conversations for the evening.  I was quite pleased at the end of the night when my taco dip was entirely finished and so was my pasta salad!   This pasta salad recipe comes from one of my bffs mothers and is great.   It reminds me of our girls trips to Door County and therefore brings a smile to my face before the first amazing bite.  At the suggestion of some friends on FB I decided to make a dip which was new for me.  I started looking up recipes online and there are about 1 million so I just read about 15 got the gist of it and made my own.  I cant believe I am admitting this but I actually had a great time at the party and it reaffirmed that we picked the most perfect neighborhood for us which was a great feeling!    Both recipes were a huge success and I would recommend them to anyone who has a summer BBQ or the dreaded block party! ;)

Door County Pasta Salad  (Best served with a fridge full of beer)

  • 1 box bow tie pasta
  • 1 green pepper cubed
  • 1 red onion sliced
  • 1 jar of roasted red peppers diced
  • 1 block mozzarella cheese cubed
  • 3/4 pound hard salami cubed
  • 1 bottle Wishbone Italian dressing ( not fat free)
  • shredded Parmesan
  • optional 1 can black olives ( I left these out since Pete hates them but they are a great addition)
Boil water and cook the pasta.  While that's happening chop all the veggies.  After the pasta cools mix everything together and add the dressing.  ENJOY!

Taco Dip
  • 16 oz cream cheese softened (if you buy the Philadelphia cream cheese that's two bricks)
  • 16 oz Sour Cream
  • 1 packet of taco seasoning
  • 1 bag shredded lettuce
  • 1 bag shredded taco cheese
  • 3 diced tomatoes
Mix the sour cream, cream cheese and taco seasoning together with a mixer until creamy.  Cover the bottom of a 9x13 pan.  Spread the lettuce, cheese and then top with tomatoes.  Serve with tortilla chips.

8 easy and inexpensive ingredients

Cook pasta for 10 mins while you chop veggies

I went heavy on the cheese since its the best part.  I don't know why I diced the red onion that small it isn't the best way....

Let the pasta cool

Add your goodies

Mix and put in fridge until party time

Ingredients for taco dip

Sour Cream, Cream Cheese, and taco powder

Cream together

Cover pan

Add Lettuce

Add cheese and tomatoes

First use of this mixer and I highly recommend it... all the attachments go in bottom so you don't misplace them
